Description

The edge-on ‘starburst’ galaxy M82 sports strong hydrogen emissions streaming above and below a luminous core, induced by the gravitational interactions with M81, and numerous supernovae within the core of this amazing galaxy ~10 per year (according to Wikipedia).

Imaged at f10 (2000 mm) I was pleased with the extra detail available in the core and the milky blue star clouds that veil the disk. A little of the glorious starburst is visible in this RGB image taken using my 183C hypercam with just the inbuilt UV/IR filter; Adding some Ha data would emphasise these.

Collected using ATP, calibrated in Nebulosity and processed in Startools. As with M81, I tried not to over stretch this data, although M82 is brighter and the SNR was better in this image. A little star reduction and 'de-warping' to the stars around the periphery complete the image.

Title: Plus 2 hours Ha

Description: I added 24 x 300s Ha (7nm Baader) to my previous RGB image - aligned in Nebulosity, cropped field rotation, processed as an L(Ha)RGB image in Startools with a final noise reduction using Nebulosity GreyCStoration.

Title: RGB data pre-processed in ASTAP

Description: 28 x 180s RGB frames calibrated, aligned, and stacked in ASTAP and processed in Startools. Unfortunately my Ha data did not turn out very good - perhaps I should have increased the gain and taken shorter exposures. I think the colour is better and I'm generally happy how this turned out given the short integration and challenge of imaging at f10 (2000 mm).
